The Labour Party has restated that the question of its national leadership has been conclusively resolved by the Supreme Court, warning against any attempts to misrepresent the court’s verdict or mislead party faithful.
In a press release issued today by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, the party addressed recent public comments by its 2023 Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed. Dr. Baba-Ahmed was reported to have referred to the suspended former National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, as the party’s substantive leader, during a meeting and in a televised appearance on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily programme.
While affirming Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s right to personal opinion and association, the party emphasized that the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 4, 2025, had effectively nullified any leadership claims by Barr. Abure. The ruling set aside prior judgments that had recognised Abure as National Chairman and struck out the originating suit for lack of jurisdiction.
Quoting directly from the judgment, the party highlighted the court’s words:
“Consequent upon the foregoing, the decisions of both the trial court and the court below recognising Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the 1st Respondent are hereby set aside…”
The party further stated that the Supreme Court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman, who is now recognised as the Interim National Chairman.
Acknowledging Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s interest in party reconciliation, the statement underlined that such efforts must align with legal realities and the rule of law. “Acceptance of Supreme Court judgments is not optional,” the party stressed, “but compulsory for all.”
As it prepares for its upcoming congresses and national convention, the Labour Party reiterated its call for unity and internal cohesion. Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, urged members to remain calm, resolute, and committed to the collective task of presenting a viable alternative to the APC-led government.
