The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed as false a viral social media claim alleging that a police inspector seen being beaten in a circulating video was caught stealing.

According to a ptess release on Thursday, 11 December 2025, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Command clarified that the officer in the video is a member of the Lagos State Taskforce who was attacked while enforcing the state’s ban on wrong parking along Brown Street, Oshodi. According to the police, the inspector had stopped a motorist attempting to park illegally when the motorist became violent, triggering a confrontation.

During the incident, the officer reportedly discharged shots onto the road, causing debris to injure some passersby and provoking a mob attack. The inspector sustained serious injuries as a result.

The police confirmed that the officer has been subjected to disciplinary measures for his unprofessional conduct. Meanwhile, thirteen suspects captured in the viral footage assaulting the officer have been arrested and are currently in custody. They will be prosecuted after investigations are concluded.

Those arrested include Dele Oriade (39), Adekunle Olalere (40), Mudashiru Olamilekan (28), Anayo Achusie (34), Joshua Enwonyin (24), Okoro Okechukwu (26), Rilwan Lateef (32), Damilare Odebode (22), Haruna Aleshi (25), Sodiq Omoniyi (26), Chukwudi Patience (25), Godstime Okafor (26), and Chinedu Divine (29).

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Olohunnare Jimoh condemned both the officer’s conduct and the mob attack, stressing that assaulting police personnel performing lawful duties is a criminal offense that will not be tolerated.

The Command urged members of the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and to continue cooperating with security agencies to maintain peace and order in the state.
