The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has refuted claims circulating on social media that it plans to organise a “#FreeNnamdiKanu protest” on October 20, 2025.
In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, the Association described the reports as false and misleading, emphasising that NANS has not declared, endorsed, or participated in any protest relating to the ongoing case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The statement noted that NANS recognises the matter as a legal issue currently before a competent court of law and, as such, would not take any partisan or unlawful stance on it.
“As a responsible students’ body, it would be inappropriate for NANS to take a position on a case before the judiciary,” the statement read. “We therefore disassociate ourselves from any group or individuals linking the Association or its leadership to any planned protest concerning Nnamdi Kanu’s trial.”
Clarifying its true agenda, NANS stated that the only activity officially scheduled for October 20 is a Peaceful Awareness Rally Against Illicit Drug Use and Abuse, aimed at sensitizing Nigerian youths—especially students—on the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of sound mental health, discipline, and productivity.
“Our mission on October 20 is simple — to save lives and raise awareness against drug abuse, not to engage in political agitation,” Comrade Oladoja said. “NANS is focused on constructive, peaceful, and development-oriented engagements that will secure a better future for Nigerian students and the nation at large.”
The student body urged the general public, media, and security agencies to disregard any contrary claims, reaffirming its commitment to peaceful advocacy, youth development, and national progress.
