…Ushering in a new era of Professionalism and strength for the Nigeria Police Force
The Nigeria Police Force has achieved a major milestone in its reform and modernisation journey with the passage of the Police Institutes Establishment Bill and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2025 by the National Assembly.
According to a press release on Monday, 13th October, 2025, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the two landmark legislations, which have now received presidential assent, mark a historic turning point in efforts to enhance professionalism, strengthen institutional capacity, and ensure sustainable funding within the Force. Together, they establish a robust legal framework for building a modern, accountable, and well-resourced police institution capable of meeting the complex security demands of today’s Nigeria.
Under the newly enacted Police Institutes Establishment Act, all police training and research institutions across the country will be consolidated and modernised. The Act strengthens their administrative structures, expands academic capacity, and aligns training curricula with global standards in law enforcement, leadership, investigation, technology, and community policing. This reform is expected to improve coordination and elevate the quality of training for officers at all levels.
The Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Act reinforces the Force’s financial and administrative framework by ensuring transparency, accountability, and sustainability in its funding mechanisms. The amendment guarantees steady, well-managed financial support for operations, logistics, training, equipment, and welfare—factors critical to enhancing the Force’s efficiency and operational capacity.
Both laws are designed to close long-standing gaps in training, infrastructure, and funding, while transforming the institutional framework of the Nigeria Police Force. They pave the way for improved welfare, modern facilities, and advanced technologies, including research collaborations and exchange programmes with reputable institutions both within and outside the country.
Emphasising officer welfare and motivation, the new framework provides for improved conditions of service, enhanced health and insurance benefits, better housing, and expanded career development opportunities—measures aimed at promoting professionalism, discipline, and ethical conduct.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, commended the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their patriotic role in strengthening the Nigeria Police Force through these vital legislative interventions. He also expressed profound gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for assenting to the Bills, describing the move as a clear testament to the administration’s commitment to modernising and professionalising policing in Nigeria.
IGP Egbetokun assured Nigerians that with this renewed legal and institutional foundation, the Force is poised to elevate its training standards, nurture world-class officers, and consolidate ongoing reforms to deliver efficient, transparent, and citizen-focused policing nationwide.
“This development is not only a milestone for the Nigeria Police Force but also a victory for national security, professionalism, and public trust,” the IGP stated.
