A sensitization workshop on data protection for distinguished members of the National Assembly was organized on Monday by the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB).
The workshop which was virtually declared open by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Pantami, had in attendance the Chairman, Senate Committee on ICT & Cybersecurity, Senator Yakubu Oseni, House Committee Chairman, ICT & Cybersecurity, Hon. Abubakar Lado Suleja & other Distinguish Members of the National Assembly.
The National Commissioner, Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, during his speech, articulated the journey through the drafting of the bill & the magnanimous value the bill would add to National development.
The National Coordinator, Nigeria ID4D, Solomon Odole Musa also spoke on the inclusiveness of stakeholders’ input to the proposed data protection bill.
The workshop which was held at Johnwood hotel, Abuja, is towards the passage of robust data protection and privacy law for Nigeria.
The Federal Government of Nigeria created the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) in February 2022. The Bureau is mandated to, inter alia, oversee the implementation of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) which was issued by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in 2019 as subsidiary legislation of the NITDA Act, 2007.
The Bureau complements the work of statutory institutions of government with the common goal of safeguarding the privacy of natural persons. For instance, see Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN, as amended); Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; Article 17 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR); Section 8 of Child Rights Act; Sections 1 & 38 of Cyber Crime Act 2015; Part IV of Consumer Code of Practice Regulations (Nigerian Communications Commission); and Article 5.4 of Consumer Protection Regulation (Central Bank of Nigeria).
