NDPB To Institutionalize Data Protection In Nigeria – SGF

The National Commissioner of Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), Dr. Vincent Olatunji on Wednesday led some staff of the Bureau on a visit to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF Boss Mustapha in Abuja.

The visit was geared at acquainting the SGF on the activities of the Bureau and seeking collaboration with OSGF towards the implementation of robust data governance in Nigeria.

While making his presentation to the SGF and management team, the National Commissioner enunciated the historical development of data privacy, the foundation of data protection in Nigeria, objectives of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), NDPB’s creation/mandate, and achievements particularly in the areas of creating trust and confidence in the nation’s Digital Economy as well as wealth and job creation. He further highlighted the overwhelming momentum in the data protection ecosystem in Nigeria which has reinforced Nigeria’s standing in the international community.

The SGF expressed his delight at the visit of the National Commissioner and reinforced the need for the establishment of the Bureau in line with global best practices. He noted that Nigeria is fast becoming a data-driven society hence, the need to curb the menace of data breaches.

He further emphasized the need to institutionalize data protection in the public sector through the issuance of a service-wide circular for compliance with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR).
