In the early hours of Thursday, a devastating flood struck the Kpege area of Mokwa, Niger State, resulting in tragic loss of life, damage to homes, and disruption of livelihoods. In response, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has mobilized essential relief efforts to support those displaced by this disaster.
According to a press release signed by the Director General, NEMA, Zubaida Umar, Search and rescue operations are currently underway, with NEMA deploying additional personnel and equipment from its Headquarters in Abuja to its Minna Operations Office. This includes the involvement of the Director of Search and Rescue to enhance ongoing efforts.
NEMA’s dedicated Search and Rescue Teams, in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross and local volunteers, are working tirelessly on the ground. The agency has deployed critical equipment, including a Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance, Rapid Intervention Vehicles, and Mobile Water Treatment and Extrication units.
As of today, NEMA’s assessment team, led by Director General Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has reported the recovery of no fewer than 100 bodies, while injured individuals have been evacuated to various health centers for treatment. Immediate first aid was also provided at the scene. The neighborhoods of Unguwan Hausawa and Tiffin Maza within Mokwa township have been identified as the epicenters of the disaster.

“We commend the relentless efforts of all rescue teams involved, including personnel from NEMA, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and local divers. Their dedication has been crucial in rescuing trapped individuals and recovering victims.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Military Disaster Response Units (DRUs) from the nearby Kainji military formation, are also on-site, ensuring the safety of survivors and emergency responders through effective crowd control and security management.
Emergency relief efforts are ongoing, with NEMA distributing assorted food items, household utensils, and tents for temporary shelter. Our mobile water treatment equipment is providing clean drinking water to affected communities. The Deputy Governor of Niger State, Comrade Yakubu Garba, has officially received the list of delivered relief materials, which include essential supplies to support displaced persons.
