Nenadi Usman Calls For Action At New Nigeria Youth Summit On Democracy Day

On the occasion of Democracy Day, Nenadi Usman, Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, delivered a powerful address at the New Nigeria Youth Summit 2025 held at Chelsea Hotel, where she emphasised the urgent need for political reform and economic transformation in Nigeria.

During her remarks, Usman was represented by his Senior Special Adviser, Media, Ken Eluma Asogwa. reflected on the sacrifices made by icons of Nigeria’s democracy, particularly Chief MKO Abiola, noting that while progress has been made, the essence of democracy—free and fair elections and accountable governance—continues to be undermined by manipulation and impunity. “As long as Nigerians cannot freely choose their leaders without interference, the spirit of June 12 cannot rest,” she stated.

Usman highlighted the summit’s theme: “Attracting Diaspora Investment, Pulling Nigeria Out of Poverty, and Transforming into a Global Economic Power,” underlining that Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads. She called the nation’s youth the “leaders of now,” urging them to harness their innovation and resilience to drive the country toward prosperity and global relevance.

She outlined key areas needed for creating an enabling environment for growth, including a stable political system, functional infrastructure, enhanced security, and a reformed financial system that allows greater access to capital.

“Let us make the memory of June 12 a living call to action,” she urged, pushing for a collective commitment from all stakeholders—government, private sector, civil society, and youth—to work towards a Nigeria marked by democratic integrity and economic vitality.

In conclusion, Usman inspired attendees to embrace their role in shaping Nigeria’s destiny, stating, “The New Nigeria we seek is possible, and it begins with the courage to demand a democracy that works.”

The event organised by the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has in attendance Mr. Peter Obi, Ms. Ankio Briggs, Professor Udenta Udenta, and a host of other important personalities.
