NIPOST And NPC Sign Memorandum Of Understanding On Digitized Postcode

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Population Commission (NPC) to ensure the roll-out of a digitized Postcode for Nigeria in its quest to improve the address system and ensure that all Nigerians are captured,

The Post Master General of NIPOST, Dr. Ismail Adewusi while addressing journalists on the occasion of the signing of the MoU, said the present effort is aimed at transitioning the system to a digital platform to create more efficiency and functionality.

He said such advanced addressing systems will promote the proper functioning of not only the postal sector but the economic sector and the security system.

“Whereas NIPOST introduced a postcode system in 1986 as part of efforts to enhance mail collection, processing, distribution, and delivery, the present effort is aimed at transitioning the system to a digital platform to create more efficiency and functionality.

“Of a certainty, such an advanced addressing system will promote the proper functioning of not just the postal sector. It is a critical infrastructure for meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including poverty reduction, disease control, and provision of basic services such as water and electricity.

On his part, the chairman of the National Population Commission, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra said that the National Population Commission is delighted to share our data set as primary data for the creation of the postcode area, postcode districts, and other entities and to design a digitalized postcode framework to facilitate the sorting and transmission of malls delivery and improve National addressing standard.

“Today, we are documenting and developing the scope of collaboration in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) which describes the bilateral agreement between us, indicate our common line of actio,n and all terms of reference is highlighted therein.

“The National Population Commission is willing to build capacity in GIS for interested Government Agencies and/or Private sector and even individuals. The NIPOST team has benefited from the training on Principles of GIS appreciation and practical use of ArcGIS software.

“This is necessary because we need to ensure that after kick-starting the project, there should be capable personnel to operate for continuity and sustainability. We will issue Certificates in Basic GIS to participants today. We look forward to a mutually rewarding relationship between both organisations and our country Nigeria.
