Ondo Govt Institutionalizing Democracy Through People-Oriented Governance — Olufemi Lawson

As Nigeria marked another Democracy Day celebration in remembrance of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, the Ondo State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the ideals of true democracy through policies and programmes that uplift the lives of its people.

Speaking with reporters in Lagos, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, Comrade Olufemi Lawson, emphasised that the administration of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa is not only joining other states and the federal government in commemorating June 12 as a symbolic date but is also actively institutionalising its values across governance in Ondo State.

Lawson noted that under Governor Aiyedatiwa, June 12 is more than a public holiday; it is a reminder of the state’s legacy in the struggle for democratic rule and a reflection of its present commitment to good governance. “Ondo was at the forefront during the dark days of the June 12 battle. We cannot afford to forget that history or betray its essence. Today, under Governor Aiyedatiwa, we are walking the talk by building a democracy that brings hope, inclusion, and prosperity to our people,” he said.

Highlighting the efforts of the current administration, Lawson disclosed that the state now hosts an annual June 12 lecture as a major commemorative event, providing a platform for civic reflection, intellectual engagement, and recognition of democracy’s heroes and heroines. “This lecture series is now institutionalised as part of the state’s annual calendar, ensuring that our people, especially the youth, remain conscious of the sacrifices made for our democracy,” he added.

He said beyond the symbolism of June 12, the administration is reflecting its principles through robust infrastructural development, responsive welfare programmes, and strengthened security across the state. According to him, the Aiyedatiwa-led government is redefining governance by focusing on projects that directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens, including rural electrification, road rehabilitation, health interventions, and educational reform.

Lawson also drew parallels between the vision of late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled 1993 election, and the policy direction of the Aiyedatiwa administration. “Chief Abiola stood for hope, better living standards, fairness, and inclusiveness. These are the very ideals that Governor Aiyedatiwa is translating into action in Ondo State today,” he stated.

He pointed to ongoing initiatives such as youth empowerment schemes, social welfare support, agricultural revitalisation, and the inclusive participation of women and marginalised groups in governance as key indicators of the administration’s democratic ethos.

Lawson concluded by reiterating that the Governor’s vision is to sustain and deepen democracy by ensuring that it delivers dividends to the people. “We are not just celebrating June 12 in Ondo State; we are living its values. Governor Aiyedatiwa is building a legacy that aligns with the dreams of those who fought and sacrificed for our democratic journey,” he affirmed.

As Nigeria reflects on three decades since the historic 1993 election, Ondo State under Governor Aiyedatiwa is positioning itself as a symbol of progressive, people-driven democracy, one that echoes the unfulfilled promises of June 12 with tangible action and visible results.
