PCRC Honours Pioneer Female Officer As Police Women Mark 70 Years Of Service

The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has honoured one of the pioneering female officers of the Nigeria Police Force as part of activities marking 70 years of women’s service in the Force.

According to a press release signed by the Director, Global Communications & Media Relation for the National Chairman, PCRC, Olayemi Esan, the ceremony, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, followed the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to recognise trailblazers whose contributions have shaped modern policing in Nigeria.

Leading the delegation of national and state executives, the PCRC National Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Mogaji Olaniyan, presented an Award Plaque and financial support to DCP Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga, KBVM, JP (Rtd.), one of the first 20 women enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force. The honour celebrated her exceptional career, decades of service, and commitment to national security.

Speaking at the event, Alhaji Olaniyan described the 70th anniversary as a historic milestone that underscores the courage, resilience, and impact of female police officers. He noted that pioneers like DCP Okuyiga laid the foundation for the advancements recorded in women’s participation in policing today.

He commended the retired senior officer for breaking barriers at a time when opportunities for women in law enforcement were limited, adding that her professionalism and dedication helped establish women as vital contributors to national development and internal security.

The PCRC Chairman reaffirmed the committee’s commitment—aligned with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police—to continually celebrate officers whose legacies inspire younger generations. He encouraged serving female personnel to draw motivation from the achievements of the early policewomen who paved the way for expanded roles in the Force.

Among the dignitaries present were the National Deputy Secretary of the PCRC, Amb. Mary Joseph; Rivers State PCRC Chairman, Amb. Voke Emore; retired senior female officers including AIG Barr. Hilda Harrison (Rtd.) and DCP Chief Cecilia Olisa (Rtd.); alongside family members and friends who joined in celebrating the honouree.

DCP Okuyiga received the award surrounded by her daughter and close relatives, adding a warm and emotional touch to the historic recognition.

The event ended with renewed calls for the continued empowerment of women in law enforcement and the sustained celebration of their contributions to national security.
