Police Re-arrest Another Escapee From Borno Prison

A prisoner named Auwalu Aminu, (aka Auwalu Kirkir) was taken into custody again by the Borno State Police Command. He had escaped from prison after severe flooding struck Maiduguri and the surrounding areas in September.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Nahum Daso, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

He said the 24-year-old prisoner was serving a sentence for stealing and criminal conspiracy at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri when the building’s fence gave way because of flooding, allowing Aminu to escape.

The statement read, “Auwalu Aminu, who was serving a jail term for criminal conspiracy and theft, unfortunately escaped during the flood incident in September 2024, which led to the collapse of the correctional facility’s fence.”

Daso further revealed that the convict was apprehended on October 16, 2024, by police officers from Bama Area Command/Banki Divisional Headquarters, following a tip-off that Aminu was spotted in Banki town.

“The police swiftly acted on credible intelligence and re-arrested the fugitive, Auwalu Aminu, who will now be handed back to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action,” the statement added.

Aminu’s re-arrest brings the number of escaped convicts apprehended so far to three, following the earlier arrests of Abubakar Mohammed and Kyari Kur, who also fled during the September 10 flood.
