The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the recovery of three bodies in the ongoing search and rescue operations following Sunday’s boat mishap in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, by Head of NEMA’s Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, the victims were recovered from Kojiyo, Bari, and Wuci communities through the combined efforts of NEMA, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and local divers. With this development, 22 persons remain missing.
NEMA’s Team Lead, Mr. Aliyu Shehu Kafindangi, also secured the support of the Nigerian Air Force Disaster Response Unit (DRU), led by Group Captain U.S. Maibuhu, to bolster the operation.
The agency noted that dam management efforts had reduced water levels, making the search more effective. It assured the public that operations would be sustained and intensified until all victims are accounted for.
Further updates are expected as the operation continues.
