SWYA Counters Allegations Of Police Maltreatment Against Sowore

The South West Youth Alliance has dismissed reports alleging that the Nigeria Police Force maltreated former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, during his recent detention.

The clarification follows a publication by Sahara Reporters quoting the Pan-Africanist Movement, State55, which accused the police of brutality against Sowore.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Director, Adenike Ajanlekoko, SWYA described the claims as “false and malicious,” insisting that Sowore was lawfully detained in line with legal provisions and was never assaulted while in police custody.

The group further stated that contrary to reports, Sowore’s alleged injuries were “stage-managed theatrics” aimed at attracting public sympathy and evading justice.

“Under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force has consistently upheld professionalism, due process, and respect for human rights,” the statement read.

SWYA also urged State55 to desist from spreading “baseless propaganda” and called on Sowore to refrain from actions capable of undermining national security, including incitement, cyberstalking, and forgery.

The group reaffirmed its confidence in the police and called on Nigerians to disregard what it described as misleading narratives intended to distract from due process and accountability.
