The Integrity Youth Alliance, an organisation that has been monitoring the development trends in the Nigeria Police Force for over 15 years, has corrected some false narration in the media that the statement of the Police Service Commission dated 31st January 2025 titled “PSC APPROVES IMMEDIATE RETIREMENT OF SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS ABOVE 60 YEARS/35 YEARS IN SERVICE” is referring to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
Reacting to the false narrative, the Publicity Director of the Alliance, Danjuma Lamido, said the Police Service Commission (Establishment) Act 2001 No. 1 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, Part II, Functions and Powers of the Commission, is unambiguous on the power of the Commission
“Section 6 (1) The Commission shall (a) be responsible for the appointment and promotion of persons to offices (other than the office of the Inspector-General of Police) in the Nigeria Police Force
“(b) dismiss and exercise disciplinary control over persons (other than the Inspector-General of Police) in the Nigeria Police Force;
The appointment and retirement of the Inspector General of Police is under the purview of the President as stipulated in Section 7(3) of the Police Act of 2020: The Inspector-General of Police shall be appointed by the President on the advice of the Police Council from among serving members of the Police Force.
Also, Section 7(5) states that the Inspector-General of Police shall only be removed from office by the President on the advice of the Police Council.
“We, therefore, call on the Inspector-General of Police to continue building a professionally competent and people-friendly police service driven by the rule of law as well as position the police force in responding to the dynamics of crime in the country, the statement concluded.
