The Integrity Youth Alliance, an organisation monitoring the development trends in the Nigeria Police Force for over 15 years, has knocked the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) for saying that Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, got a tenure extension.
Responding to a publication titled “CDHR Condemns Tenure Elongation for Egbetokun, Calls for Immediate Replacement,” the Publicity Director of the Alliance, Danjuma Lamido, said that it is unfortunate that the now-biased Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) could ignorantly say that Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, tenured office violates civil service rules and undermines democratic principles.
“We wish to enlighten the ignorance of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights that the office of the Inspector General of Police is an appointment and tenured for 4 years irrespective of age or service years as stipulated under Section 7(6) and Section 8(a) of the Police Act 2020 (as amended).
“The aim of fixing the tenure of the office of the Inspector General of Police at 4 years irrespective of age or service years is to guarantee the tenure of the IGP and revolutionise police operations by enhancing accountability, modernising policing methods, and fostering a more harmonious relationship between the police and the community, the statement concluded.
