Youth Alliance Warns The National Coalition Against Mass Killings And Impunity To Respect The Rights Of Police Personnel

The Integrity Youth Alliance has warned the National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity against instigating the Nigeria Police personnel posted to protect the lives and property of Nigeria during the June 12 Democracy Day

Responding to a publication in Sahara Reporters titled “Coalition Warns Nigerian Police, Security Forces Against Using Force On June 12 Protesters,” the Publicity Director of the Alliance, Danjuma Lamido, said that from experience, most of the protesters against the government always incite the police personnel by throwing stones, sharp objects, machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives.

“IGP Egbetokun, as a law-abiding police officer, will never suppress peaceful protest, but in the instance where individuals begin to engage in violent behaviour or threaten others, law enforcement, the police, will not fold their arms.

“While peaceful protests are generally protected under the right to free speech and assembly in many places, that shouldn’t give protesters the audacity to start damaging property, whether public or private; therefore, the police will intervene to prevent further destruction.

The further said that protests that block streets, highways, or access to important facilities like hospitals may prompt police intervention, especially if they believe it poses a safety risk.

“The National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity should also take note that if law enforcement receives reports of criminal behaviour occurring during the protest, they will surely respond to address those concerns.

“The coalition should also know that if tensions escalate between protesters and counter-protesters, or between protesters and onlookers, police will also intervene to prevent conflict.

“We state emphatically that the Nigerian police under the leadership of IGP Kayode Egbetokun are not known for spontaneous mass killings, brutality, arbitrary arrests, or enforced disappearances; criminalising or militarising peaceful protest actions.

“In conclusion, we sincerely hope that the National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity keeps communication open between them and the Nigeria police to help reduce misunderstandings and encourage peaceful resolutions.
