Following an intelligence-driven operation, soldiers from the 81 Division have prevented an attempt to smuggle Seven Hundred and Ninety-Two (792) packets of illegal substances into Ogun State at a checkpoint along the Ilaro-Benin Republic Border. The drugs are believed to be Cannabis sativa (marijuana).
According to a press release on Friday, 2nd September 2022 signed by the Acting Deputy Director, 81 Division Army Public Relations, Major Olaniyi Osoba, he said that the parcels of Indian hemp were concealed in a truck coming from the Volta Region of Ghana. It was estimated that the suspected illicit drugs were worth about Ten Million Naira (#10,000,000.00) and were to be delivered to a drug syndicate based in Lagos that is presently on the run.
A search of the vehicle carrying the alleged shipment revealed that it was made particularly to transport illegal substances since it had a unique compartment welded to its base for concealment, but it was visible upon closer inspection. The soldiers at the checkpoint had to stay vigilant to find the hidden drugs after they refused a bribe from the alleged drug gangs.
For security authorities to act quickly, the general public is urged to keep giving them vital information about criminal activity.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Lagos Command has received the suspected illicit drugs and the suspects for further processing.
