Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya (Dan Majen Gombe) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for demonstrating a commitment toward getting Nigeria to achieve a net zero emission by 2060 in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement which is a legally binding international treaty on Climate Change.
According to a press release on Sunday, 31st July 2022 signed by the Director-General (Press Affairs) Gombe Government House, Ismaila Uba Misilli, he said the Governor also hailed the President for appointing Dr. Salisu Dahiru (Dan Masanin Keffi) as Pioneer Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change charged with the responsibility to drive implementation of Nigeria’s Climate Change Agenda.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya, in a statement, described the appointment of Dr. Dahiru by Mr. President as a well-deserved one considering his pedigree as a thorough-bred environmental resources management expert, forester, seasoned academic, and highly cerebral figure with impeccable footprints in the Climate Change policy drive and implementation at both national and international levels.
Governor Inuwa recalled Dr. Dahiru’s role as the pioneering lead of Nigeria’s Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) Programme and as the country’s lead negotiator for the Agriculture, Forest and Other Land Use, AFOLU, sector under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC, noting that in both assignments, the new DG had distinguished himself and proven his worth.
He expressed confidence that Dan Masanin Keffi will pilot the affairs of the National Climate Change Council considering his experience and remarkable trajectory as the National Project Coordinator for the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, (NEWMAP) and the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) Project, both financed by the World Bank and both of which Gombe State has since aligned with.
The Governor, on behalf of the Government and people of Gombe state, congratulated the new national climate change helmsman for being found worthy to superintend over this critical Council, urging him to bring to bear his wealth of experience in the task of developing a carbon market framework and a National Adaptation Plan, which will be in line with the aspirations of the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions NDC.
He assured him of the support, solidarity, and partnership of the Government and good people of Gombe state as he takes on the new task.
