Court Contempt: Bauchi Government Drops Charges Against Islamic Clergy After NSA Steps In

The charges against Mallam Idris Abdulaziz have been withdrawn by the Bauchi State Government, as Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Advisor (NSA), advocates for the Islamic Cleric while emphasising peaceful coexistence.

Recall that the prominent Islamic cleric Malam Idriss Abdulaziz Dutsen Tanshi was gazetted for contempt of court by the Bauchi State Police Command on February 5, 2024. This action is put on hold.

On April 8, 2024, at the Police State headquarters, Malam Idriss Abdulaziz and the Government of Bauchi State signed a peace pact thanks to the efforts of Commissioner of Police Bauchi State Command CP Auwal Musa Mohammad who is committed to fostering harmonious relations and peaceful coexistence among the State’s leaders. The Department of State Security Services (DSS) Director, the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Bauchi State, the Commandant Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and others signed and witnessed the peace agreement.

In his capacity as the Chairman of the Security and Allied Agency in Bauchi State, the Commissioner of Police decided to make sure that, among other things, the communication gap that was found to be the primary cause of the parties’ failing relationship would be promptly closed.

He thanked Governor Bala Mohammed for responding to the NSA and other pertinent parties’ request for a peace agreement and emphasised that all parties will carefully abide by the written agreement that was reached.

Malam Idris Abdulaziz Dutsen Tanshi, according to the CP, ought to realise that although he has the right to free expression, he shouldn’t use the pulpit as a place to disparage or make harsh remarks about preachers or clerics. Regardless of differences of opinion or religious beliefs, he should endeavour via his preaching to promote a climate of peace and harmony throughout the society. Thus, he must respect established authority going forward.

“We hope that this marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation and understanding in Bauchi State”, said the CP as contained in a press statement issued by Bauchi State Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
