DG NEMA Evaluates Collapse Of Jos School Building; Expresses Sympathy To Victims

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Mrs. Zubaida Umar today Sunday 14th, 2024 visited Jos, Plateau State where she conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the school building that collapsed last Friday and commiserated with the government and people of the state, especially families that lost their children and those that were injured in the disaster.

The visit by the NEMA boss was less than 72 hours after the incident. She decried the loss of lives and said the tragedy was avoidable.

She emphasized the need for developers to adhere to building codes to prevent unnecessary collapse of buildings, which often result in loss of lives and injuries.

She said “I decided to come myself because it is such a huge and avoidable loss. It is something that could have been totally avoided. “

The DG NEMA commended the search and rescue at the site by NEMA, SEMA, Nigerian Police, NSCDC, Fire Service and all other stakeholders and particularly noted the roles played by the community towards the success of the emergency rescue.

She also visited some of the injured students who were receiving treatment at Bingham University Teaching Hospital before proceeding to Government House, where she conveyed a message of sympathy to the State Government.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang appreciated the DG NEMA for the visit and said the state remained grateful for the prompt response by NEMA to the incident and other disasters that have occurred in the state.
