The Commissioner of Police Enugu State Command, CP Ahmed Ammani, has commiserated with the families and friends of six persons that lost their lives in a fatal road motor vehicle accident, involving a Toyota Hiace commercial bus and a Howo-Sino truck, on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at about 9.20 a.m. at the CBN Bus Stop, along the Enugu/Onitsha Expressway, in Trans-Ekulu Enugu.

A statement on Thursday signed by the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said that the Commissioner while describing the sad accident as avoidable, has prayed for the eternal repose of the souls of the deceased victims. He cautions road users, particularly drivers, to exercise the utmost patience and care while driving and to desist from reckless and/or dangerous driving that could put their lives and that of their passengers in danger.

Accordingly, the CP has ordered the officer in charge of the command’s Motor Traffic Department to commence and accelerate an investigation into the accident to aid further policing actions.

Meanwhile, preliminary investigation reveals that the commercial bus, with registration number XL 884 ENU, driven by one Simon Umeh and loaded with five passengers, was headed to New Market Enugu when it had a head-on collision with the truck coming from the opposite direction while attempting to overtake a smoky vehicle ahead.

The lifeless bodies of the driver and the five passengers were taken to the hospital, where their deaths were confirmed by doctors, and their corpses were deposited in the mortuary for preservation. Also, the accident vehicles have been recovered and taken to the police station, while frantic investigative efforts are being made to arrest the yet-to-be-identified driver of the truck, who fled the scene before the arrival of the police.
