The Nigeria Police Force’s efforts to increase capacity, enhance services, and fortify ties with sister agencies and the public have paid off in the fight against crime across the country in the exact year that IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun became the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police
Speaking to top officers and media representatives, the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police, IGP Egbetokun reviewed the accomplishments and difficulties encountered in the year after taking office. He also used the opportunity to consider, assess, and make plans.
He stated that among the many difficulties the Force has encountered in the last 12 months include acts of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery. The Nigeria Police Force has remained strong and committed to carrying out its mission despite these threats.
The IGP praised the officers for their diligence and commitment, highlighting the favourable outcomes attained through enhanced partnerships with sister services and the public, capacity building, and service enhancements.
In reviewing the year’s achievements, IGP Egbetokun recognised the significant accomplishments of his administration, which included presenting ₦9.85 billion to the families of fallen officers under the Group Life Assurance Scheme and the IGP Family Welfare Scheme, declaring April 7 as National Police Day, promoting the first-ever Police Commendation and Awards Ceremony, and promoting 33,867 officers based on qualifications, competence, and open positions.
Aside from these, there is also the development of infrastructure, which will result in the commissioning of several projects, such as the Nigeria Police Resource Centre, the International Conference Centre, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), the Force Intelligence Building, the Force Public Relations School, the Police Intelligence School located in Share, Kwara State, facilities for exhibiting and storing evidence, and recent acquisitions of operational assets.
The Nigeria Police Force has apprehended 35,496 suspects for their roles in numerous crimes in the last year; additionally, they have freed 1,907 victims who were kidnapped, retrieved 2,750 firearms, 22,569 rounds, and 1,540 vehicles across the country; and last but not least, the Legal/Prosecutions Section has successfully prosecuted 29,052 criminal cases, resulting in 16,200 convictions. The IGP presented security preparations to assist the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in guaranteeing a peaceful election process. The conference also covered the impending gubernatorial elections in the states of Edo and Ondo.
In addition to thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his support, the Inspector-General of Police reaffirms the Nigeria Police’s commitment to providing honest and devoted service to the country. Additionally, he assures that the Police would cooperate to create a Nigeria that is safer and more secure.
