It’s an offence to knock down or hit pedestrians at a zebra crossing.
This was stated by the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on his X handle, @Princemoye1.
The statement read, “Many don’t have regard for it at all. It’s compulsory that every driver or biker stop for pedestrians on the zebra crossing, whether on the green or not.
“In fact, if you knock down a pedestrian on Zebra Crossing, such an offence may be treated as a criminal offence, not just mere a traffic offence.
“Always observe traffic rules to save yourself and others on the road. Be warned.
Under the Nigeria Highway Code, you have no right of way at a pedestrian crossing or Zebra crossing until you have stepped on it; even then, ensure no vehicle is coming, and when you do, traffic should give way to you.
The Nigeria Highway Code advises those who want to cross the Zebra to do their traffic drill before they start to cross and exercise caution.
