The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed police personnel to wear black bands throughout the seven-day mourning period in tribute to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.
According to Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi, this directive is to pay tribute to and honour the late General, who showed gallantry, dedication, and passion for fighting violent crimes and insurgency in Nigeria. He was a great leader who deserves to be honoured by all means.
The late COAS died at the age of 56 years.
Recall that in a statement on Wednesday, Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on behalf of the IGP, said that Lagbaja was known for his tireless efforts in combating insurgency, armed banditry, and violent extremism.
“His dedication to the Nigerian Army and the nation earned him great admiration. The Inspector-General’s gesture reflects the deep respect and appreciation for General Lagbaja’s remarkable service,” the statement read.
During this difficult time, the IGP also commiserated with the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and General Lagbaja’s family, colleagues, and loved ones.
According to the police chief, Lagbaja’s legacy and commitment to Nigeria’s security will never be forgotten.
