Nigeria Police Will Persist In Protecting The Law And Ensuring Justice For All – IGP Egbetokun

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police Force will have a sacred and personal responsibility to uphold the rule of law, protect humanity, and ensure justice for all.

The IGP, represented by the DIG FCIID, DIG Abiodun Sylvester Alabi, made this known at a two-day workshop for officers in charge of the legal department of the Nigeria Police Force across the country.

“Today, we gathered here where the call for human rights protection and promotion is as old as a clear call for a grim discourse, as the Nigeria police force will have a sacred and personal responsibility to uphold the rule of law, protect humanity, and ensure justice for all, the IGP said.

Speaking further at the all-important sensation workshop on building an effective, efficient, and lasting human rights-based legacy for Nigeria police force, the IGP further said the workshop is a significant step towards achieving that goal.

The Inspector General of Police further expressed his deep commitment to the reform and transformation of the Nigeria police force into a world-class law enforcement agency that prioritises human rights, justice, and accountability.

“This workshop is a critical step towards achieving that vision. Human rights are the cornerstone of modern policing, and it’s our duty to protect and promote them. The Nigeria police force has the responsibility to uphold the rule of law, protect humanity, and ensure justice, for this requires a deep understanding of human rights principles and a commitment to integrating them into operations.

“Our legal section must be a beacon of hope and justice for all, where human rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled.

“This workshop is designed to provide you with knowledge keys unless you partner to build an effective, efficient, and lastly, human rights negation project.

“I believe you are going to engage in robust discussions, share best practices and experience, and explore innovative solutions to the challenges we face.

“As legal officers, you play a vital role in supporting the rule of law and promoting justice. So your dedication and commitment to this noble cause are crucial in building a society that values human rights, the IGP said.

In his welcome address, CP Legal, CP Ehiede Oyakkhire said that as the participants gathered to sharpen their knowledge and skills, ensuring that the law serves as a shield for the protection and promotion of human rights, they must recognise that the power of the law is not an end in itself but a means to an end.

“As legal officers, you play a vital role in upholding the rule of law and promoting justice. Your dedication and commitment to noble causes are crucial in building a society that values and respects human rights. You are the guardians of justice, and your work has a direct impact on the lives of countless individuals and communities.

He said further, “Throughout this workshop, we will explore the principles and practices necessary for an effective and efficient human rights-based legal section. We will delve into the importance of accountability, transparency, and fairness in our legal system. We will discuss the need for a rights-based approach where the rights of all individuals are respected, protected, and fulfilled.

“As Sir Lord Denning aptly put it, ‘Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.’ Let us work together to ensure that our legal system is a beacon of hope and justice for all. Let us strive to build a legal system that is fair, impartial, and accessible to all, regardless of race, gender, religion, or social status.

CP Ehiede Oyakkhire further said, “We must recognise that the Nigeria Police Force has a critical role to play in upholding human rights and that your work as legal officers is essential in ensuring that the police force operates within the bounds of the law. You are the champions of justice, and your work has the power to transform lives and communities.

“Throughout this workshop, we will engage in robust discussions, share best practices, and explore innovative solutions to the challenges we face. We will learn from each other’s experiences and draw inspiration from the wisdom of legal luminaries like Sir Lord Denning.

“Let us embrace this opportunity to build a more just and equitable society where human rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled. Let us work together to create a legal system that is a shield for the vulnerable, a sword against injustice, and a beacon of hope for all, CP said.
