……Assures adequate security, cautions against unruly conduct of the protest
The Commissioner of Police of Enugu State Command, CP Ahmed Ammani on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, met with the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), to discuss ways of ensuring that the planned nationwide protest by the organized labour unions is done peacefully in the State and without being hijacked by criminals, in line with the directive of the Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
According to a press release signed by the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said that the CP assures them of necessary security and safety during the protest, noting that while they have the constitutional right to protest, they must do so in the most orderly manner, given the security challenges inherent in conducting protests in these times. He, therefore, charges the organized labour to conduct the protest in line with set-out plans, to avoid breach of public peace and/or having miscreants hijack the exercise.
The Chairman of the Enugu State Chapter of TUC, Comrade Ben Asogwa, who led the team comprising the State Vice Chairman and the Secretary of NLC, Comrades Ekere Ikechukwu and Jasper Kelechi respectively, and the State Treasurer of TUC, Comrade Ozoemena Solomon, informed the CP of the plans designed by the organized labour in the State to ensure a peaceful protest. He, therefore, assured of maximum cooperation with the Police and the orderly conduct of their members during the exercise.
Joining the CP to receive and interact with the joint labour leaders were DCP Olasoji Akinbayo, DCP Fidelis Ogarabe and DCP Peter Ezebuike, respectively in charge of the Command’s Departments of Operations, the State CID, and Finance and Administration. Others include ACP Hope Isiani Okereke, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Department of Finance and Administration, and SP Patrick Onuh, the Officer in charge of the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB).
