2023 Yuletide: Police Arrest Man For Possessing And Transacting In Counterfeit Naira Notes In Enugu

Police Operatives serving in Awkunanaw Division of the Enugu State Command, acting on a tip-off, on Tuesday, 19th December 2023 at about 6 p.m., arrested a male suspect, one Chukwuebuka Igwebuike aged 37, at Afor Market, Garki Awkunanaw, Enugu, and recovered from him, suspected counterfeit one thousand Nigerian Naira notes, totaling three hundred and sixty-two thousand Naira (N362,000.00).

A statement on Friday, 22nd December 2023 signed by the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said that preliminary investigation proves that the suspect confessed to the crime, stating that he used the fake one thousand Naira notes to buy items of small prices and get change for genuine smaller denominations.

DSP Daniel Ndukwe further said that the suspect will be arraigned in court and prosecuted accordingly once ongoing investigations are concluded.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu has urged citizens of the State and the public to be vigilant and wary of whom they receive and exchange all the denominations of mint Nigerian Naira with, especially this yuletide.

He also encouraged the citizenry to quickly report anyone in possession of, or transacting in counterfeit Nigerian Naira notes, to the nearest Police Station for necessary policing actions.
