Garko Sets To Train 50 Teenagers In Nigeria

By Muib Shefiu

With the proliferation of many young literary enthusiasts in Nigeria demanding for mentorship platforms, the young award-winning writer, Adamu Usman Garko, author of When Day Breaks; and a winner to many local and international competitions, including the 2020 Nigeria Prize For Teen Authors, has swung into action with the creation of his initiative, Jewel Writing Workshop which the first maiden edition is scheduled for 31st October 2020 at Matrix International Academy, Gombe.

Speaking on the motive behind the creation of such a rare and highly educative platform to encourage the upsurge of talents in Nigeria, Adamu Usman Garko said: “Although I have a ton of young people I have been mentoring and providing with free books for their improvement and needful orientation. Also, these young people have Impressed me with their readiness to improve themselves and build on their God-given talents. However,  it is hard to accommodate the many who have reached out to me with equal attention so I come up with the idea of a writing workshop tagged “Jewel Writing Workshop.”

During a one-on-one encounter with the Convener, it is completely understandable that the sole motive that triggered the idea is the feedback of many young minds since after the presentation of his book in the year 2019.  The influx of teenagers and youths cultivating interest in the art of writing immediately after his groundbreaking anthology, has pushed him to create the platform to satiate the demands of young literary enthusiasts who are searching for ample mentorships and guides on how to write correctly and rightly.

Jewel Writing Workshop is meant for teenagers across the country with the sole aim of instilling in them the best versions of themselves through highly educative and motivating intellectual drilling. Jewel Writing Workshop is not limited to any part of the country as it will be organized in the nooks and crannies of the country.

Also, one of the aims of the workshop is to bridge the gap between teen writers and highly prolific writers. It will also create an avenue for teen writers to stabilize their feet in the open field of writing.  Other aims include; contributing to qualitative education in the country and eradication of illiteracy.

For the first edition, Jewel Writing Workshop has partnered with three organizations in order to make the actualisation of the workshop realizable. The organizations are Matrix International Academy Gombe, Center For Information Technology And Development, Fombina Imprints and Applied WorldWide.

The general public is hereby invited to Grace the Closing Ceremony scheduled for 4pm–6pm on 31st October, 2020 at Matrix International Academy Gombe.
